The problem with travelling around the world with your gear is always safety. Is it going to get lost, stollen, will it break or get damaged? And at least for the last point, I don’t worry to much about that anymore since I received my foam inserts from
Despite the look of there website, they make an excellent product. I took me a little bit to decide whether or not I even wanted to place the order with them. I had heard a few good things about them but the comments were few and far between. And even when I wanted to dive a little bit more into the software they have for designing a case, I had to have a Windows PC in order to even load it. So that sucked!
But I’m glad I did. Once you learn the basics of there free software (which only takes a good 30 minutes) it went by pretty quick. I ended up designing two custom foam inserts for two Pelican 1560 hardcase shells I have… and I’ll be designing another one this week.
They’re not all that cheap (roughly $180 for my 1560 inserts) but the quality and precision cutting is bang on.
I feel so much more confident when shipping my equipment around with me now as I know that it’ll be well taken care of.
The nice thing about this too is that it’s about 3 times denser than the standart ‘pick-n-pull’ foam that comes with a Pelican case. Which I really appreciate as I’ve already mangled two ‘pick-n-pull’ foam inserts with general travel usage.
I’ll have a better idea of how they handle this April as I head off on a 4 week film shoot in Africa (Zambia & Kenya). But so far, I’m recommending to to everyone with a Pelican case.
